A combination of Jakob stainless steel ropes and rods has been used at Allianz Park, the new home of Saracens Rugby Club, to provide the structure for a green wall to adorn the stadium’s timber-clad façade.
The renovated stadium was officially opened in February 2013 and was designed to blend seamlessly into its environment. It is the only stadium in the UK to have achieved the coveted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard.
The Jakob green wall was installed by Scotscape Ltd and consists of a combination of vertical ropes and horizontal rods, with the ropes being supported at the top and bottom of the 15 metre tall structure.
Commenting on the project, Nikki Errington, Director at MMA Architectural Systems (the sole suppliers for the Swiss-manufactured Jakob range throughout the UK), said: “Although ordinarily we would advise horizontal supports to be at more frequent intervals, the versatility of our product range enabled us to adapt our system to meet the needs of the client and this particular installation. Effectively we were able to use products from our standard range in a non-standard way, without any loss in performance and without a cost premium.
“As part of the installation Hedera Helix ‘green ripple’ and Virginia creeper were selected, fast-growing climbing plants which will mature to provide a stunning green wall”.
